York, Halton, Peel Regions expanding to vaccinate residents 65+

York, Halton, and Peel Regions are all moving to a younger age group for the next round of COVID-19 vaccine appointments.

Markham mayor Frank Scarpitti says residents 65-and-over can start booking at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday while Halton Region tweeted residents 65 and over could begin booking appointments on Wednesday.

Scarpitti was sure to be clear that no appointment means no shot.

The public health unit says approximately 15,000 new vaccine appointments will open and that York Region will continue to offer additional appointments as more vaccine becomes available.

The following locations will offer a vaccine for those 65-and-over:

• Aaniin Community Centre in Markham (TEMPORARILY CLOSED)
• Canada’s Wonderland (Drive-thru) located in Vaughan (TEMPORARILY CLOSED)
• Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital located in Vaughan
• Georgina Ice Palace located in Georgina (TEMPORARILY CLOSED)
• Maple Community Centre located in Vaughan
• Ray Twinney Recreation Complex located in Newmarket
• Richmond Green Sports Centre located in Richmond Hill

Cornell Community Centre in Markham continues to vaccinate people 70-and-up, York Region said.

The move comes even as York Region closes three of its mass clinics temporarily because of anticipated delays with the Moderna vaccine this weekend.

Clinics at Georgina Ice Palace, the Aaniin Community Centre in Markham, and Canada’s Wonderland drive-through are expected to reopen next week.

All other clinics continue to run at full speed, seven days a week.

On Tuesday, Halton Region also announced it’s expanding its vaccination eligibility criteria to seniors as young as 65.

Residents 65 and older can book their vaccine appointment starting Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.

Other groups remain eligible.

The following locations will offer a vaccine for those 65-and-over:

• Compass Point Bible Church in Burlington
• FirstOntario Arts Centre in Milton
• Gellert Community Centre in Halton
• Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington
• Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital in Oakville
• St. Volodymyr Cultural Centre in Oakville

 

Residents can book their shots at Halton.ca.

Finally, Peel Region says eligible residents can begin to book starting immediately.

Clinics located at William Osler’s Chinguacousy Wellness Centre and Brampton Civic Hospital, and Trillium Health Partners Mississauga Hospital, and the University of Toronto, Mississauga sites are taking bookings today.

Dr. Lawrence Loh says if you’re eligible to be vaccinated, go as soon as you can.

“Our supply is growing and more and more appointments are available each day in the Region of Peel,” said Loh.

“We are ready for you. Please, come and get your vaccine.”

Loh says Peel’s three hospital-run sites – Trillium, William Osler, and the University of Toronto/Mississauga – will move to offer limited appointments for those 65-and-older.

Vaccinations for residents aged 70 and older continue at Peel Public Health clinics.
