Police seek man accused of putting hidden camera in washroom of Scarborough business

By News Staff

Toronto police have released a security image of a man wanted in connection to a voyeurism investigation that saw a hidden camera placed in the washroom of a Scarborough business.

Police were called to the Midland Avenue and Silver Star Boulevard area last Friday.

An investigation was launched and police say the suspect entered the establishment’s washroom on Wednesday, May 9, at around 6:27 p.m.

Once inside the washroom, police say he affixed a false wall socket that contained a hidden camera.

He’s described as Asian, between 25 and 40 years old, clean shaven with short black hair and a thin-to-medium build.

He was wearing a red sweatshirt/jacket, with blue stripes on the sleeves, tan pants and blue shoes.

Police tell 680 NEWS it’s too early to connect the Scarborough investigation with a similar case in Toronto’s financial district where someone also placed a phony light socket hidden camera in a Starbucks washroom.

The Toronto police technical division is currently trying to determine if the devices used in both washrooms are the same.

In the Starbucks case, a customer told the store’s manager there was a camera in the electrical outlet in one of the unisex washrooms at the 4 King Street W. location on May 2.

Officers went to the store the next day and collected the camera.

A Starbucks employee posted a screenshot online (below) of a message from a Starbucks managers’ chat group that acknowledges a recording device was found in the washroom.

The employee told CityNews they posted the message after becoming “concerned” by the company’s failure to notify the public.
