Business set to spike on Super Bowl Sunday

By News Staff

While the final result of Super Bowl LII between the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles is the subject of endless debate in the days leading up to the big game, one thing is certain; food and drink establishments will be big winners when the confetti finally falls on Sunday night.

The Super Bowl tends to be a revenue generator for most companies as football fans – hard core and casual alike – gather together to watch the American spectacle.

When it comes to feeding those fans, pizza and chicken wings are at the top of the list. Pizza Hut Canada says it will sell 90,000 pizzas across Canada on Sunday – 17,000 alone in the GTA. That’s a 50 per cent increase compared to an average Sunday. In the United States, Pizza Hut expects to double its sales to almost 2-million pies.

St. Louis Bar & Grill says it expects more than 100,000 chicken wings to go flying out of its kitchen on Sunday. That is 20-times its daily volume. And for the first time, the eatery says it will be accepting orders through their online ordering platform. If you plan to visit one of their restaurants to take in the game, St. Louis Bar & Grill says it won’t be charging admission fees or cover charges at any of its 58 locations. Some establishments are even taking reservations.

Fans will need something to wash all those wings and pizzas down and The Beer Store says it’s ready to serve. On any given Sunday, outlets sell the equivalent of 67,000 two-fours but on Super Bowl Sunday, that figure jumps to 105,000. The LCBO says while there’s no noticeable in-store boost in sales from the game, they have spent the past week filling extra orders from clients such as bars and restaurants.

Football and wagering go hand-in-hand. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation expects its proposition cards – novelty or side bets within the game – to once again drive product sales. Last year, players wagered more than $1-million on two prop cards offered by the OLG. Football wagering accounts for 27 per cent of all OLG sports lottery sales.
