Sudden swarm of bees blankets Pickering home

By Michael Talbot

It’s a scene worthy of Hitchcock: thousands of bees suddenly blanketing a home, darkening the sky like a menacing storm cloud while a worried couple hunkers down inside.

But this isn’t fiction. The home is in Pickering, near Dixie Road and Finch Avenue. The bees arrived on Friday afternoon, just before 1 p.m. And the couple, the Fourniers, are understandably scared.

“They just suddenly decided to pick my house,” Michael Fournier told CityNews on Friday.

“All of a sudden the window got black, my wife was wondering if it was a thunderstorm, she could barely see outside.”

Rather than thunder claps and howling winds, this storm of insects emanated an apocalyptic electric buzz.

Michael fears the bees are slowly penetrating his home.

“They are in the wall, I can hear them buzzing inside the drywall,” he said. “I was able to get a hold of a company that removes bees and they will try and get here between 5 and 6 p.m.

In the meantime, he’s put his two cats in the basement, and can only wait for help.

Peter Chorabik, of Toronto Bee Rescue, says he’ll need all the help he can get.

“Within a couple of hours, these bees will be entirely inside the window,” he said. “They like bay windows, natural gas fireplaces and other gaps in homes.

“Mike is going to have to find someone to take apart the roof ASAP, because once the queen gets in, she’ll never come back out.”
