Boy, 12, airlifted to hospital after QEW crash in Mississauga

By News Staff

A 12-year-old boy was airlifted to SickKids Hospital with serious injuries — and six others were also hurt — after a multi-vehicle crash on the QEW at Cawthra Road in Mississauga.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the crash happened before 11 a.m. Thursday, when a driver couldn’t stop in time for slowing traffic and rear-ended the vehicle in front.

That vehicle then spun out into the middle lane, hitting a transport truck. The truck driver lost control and hit two other vehicles.

“Two [of the injured] were children under the age of 12, the remaining were adults or older than 12,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said from the scene.

“We have a transport truck involved and (up to) six other vehicles involved as well with significant damage.”

Aside from the boy, an adult was also seriously injured. Five more were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital. None of the injuries are life-threatening.

Schmidt said the investigation continues and charges are possible.

The Fort Erie-bound lanes of the QEW reopened around 4:30 p.m.
