Durham police helicopter, K-9 unit help arrest fleeing suspect

By News Staff

Durham regional police have released dramatic video of the arrest of a Toronto man with the assistance of a K-9 unit on Saturday.

Officers responded to a call at around 3 a.m. after a citizen informed them that he was following a suspected drunk driver on Salem Road in Ajax.

Police say they found the vehicle and tried to stop it, but the suspect refused and continued to drive erratically. They stopped pursuing him due to high speeds and safety concerns.

Durham regional police helicopter unit Air1 was then called in to assist and led officers to the vehicle at an address in Toronto.

Video from the helicopter shows a brief car chase ending in a driveway, after which the suspect attempts to flee on foot. He was quickly taken into custody with the assistance of the K-9 unit.

Police say a large quantity of cocaine with a street value of more than $55,000 was seized. Cash totaling approximately $3,800 was also seized.

Michael Benyamin, 28, is facing multiple charges including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking. He was held for a bail hearing.
