Two passersby are being credited for helping to rescue two other men trapped in a tractor-trailer after a crash in Pickering.

The tractor-trailer was travelling on the westbound collector lanes of Highway 401 early Thursday morning, when the driver lost control on the Whites Road off-ramp, slammed into a pole and ended up in a ditch.

Matt Boudreau, from Cobourg, told CityNews he was on his way to work when he came across the crash around 4 a.m., moments after it happened.

He was first on the scene, but was soon joined by a Brinks guard.

Together, Boudreau and the guard, jumped into action to help pull the two men out of the cab.

“The driver was unconscious, the passenger was asleep in the back of the truck. He had come flying out [of the back of the truck], went into the windshield. He ended up being pinned,” Boudreau said.

The two men inside the truck were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The right collector lane of the highway remains closed.
