Man critically injured in two storey fall at old Maple Leaf Gardens

By News Staff

A man is in critical condition after falling two storeys inside the old Maple Leaf Gardens building at Church and Carlton streets.

Police say it happened just before 8 p.m. Saturday night near the building’s escalators. The victim, said to be in his 20s, fell nearly 10 meters and suffered a serious head injury.

“I was buying sushi at the counter, debating should I eat it here or at home …when I heard a noise like a squash hitting the ground,” an eyewitness told CityNews. “I turned around and there was this man lying on the floor. I don’t know if he jumped or just fell.”

Another witness said he believed the man was sitting on the escalator railing when he “tipped over” and fell.

The former iconic hockey arena is now called the Mattamy Athletic Centre and is home to Loblaws at Maple Leaf Gardens. It features an open concourse with large escalators connecting the first floor entrance area to the second floor gym and third floor hockey rink.
