Cyclist injured in crash involving Toronto police cruiser, SIU called in

The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a cyclist was injured in a collision with a Toronto police cruiser in the city’s east end.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said police were called to the McCowan Road and Lawrence Avenue East area around 7:30 p.m. on Monday. It’s not known why police were called.

When police arrived at the scene, they found a man a man on a bicycle on McCowan. The SIU said bicycle and police cruiser were then involved in a crash.

The SIU was called in around 3 a.m.

The cyclist, a 52-year-old man, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
