Toronto sign vandalized during Nuit Blanche

By News Staff

The iconic Toronto sign located at Nathan Phillips Square became an unwilling participant during last night’s Nuit Blanche, the all-night arts fest.

People using black marker vandalized several of the free standing letters, scribbling messages and leaving their names and Twitter handles.

“It’s quite sad, but are we also surprised?” writes reddit poster snoreboggie. “Nuit Blanche through the years has turned from a celebration of art to an excuse to act foolish.”

Another poster wondered if the city would have protected the sign by putting a plastic layer over the letters.

“It looked like they stationed a lone security guard there after the fact but you’d think they would have been a bit more pro active,” wrote TheMikeGShow.

Good news, though, no permanent damage was done to the sign. A spokesperson with Nuit Blanche tells 680 News the marker has since been washed off.
