By News Staff

A Peel Regional Police officer is facing assault charges stemming from an off-duty incident in Brampton this summer.

In a release, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said Peel police received numerous 911 calls concerning an altercation on the morning of June 10.

Before units could respond, two off-duty officers intervened.

“As a result of his interaction with the subject officer, a 17-year-old male suffered a broken wrist,” the SIU said.

The SIU invoked its mandate and after an investigation Const. Joel Mazzotta was charged.

He’s facing one count of assault causing bodily harm and one count of assault and is scheduled to appear in a Brampton court on Oct. 11.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
