Man poses as producer to plan fake events during TIFF

Toronto police are warning the public about a scam targeting event planners.

Police say the know of three victims so far who have lost more than $162,000.

According to investigators, a man poses as a producer and courts event planning companies to plan an event during the Toronto International Film Festival.

The man sends the event planner a large sum of money via a fraudulent cheque, and tells the planner to send booking fees to guest speakers through a talent agency in the U.S. However, that talent agency is a fake.

The man then collects the booking fees.

Police have not released the man’s identity or if he is facing any charges.

Police are concerned there may be other victims.
