Explosion at medical marijuana dispensary sends one to hospital

By News Staff

A huge explosion at a medical marijuana dispensary in midtown sent one man to hospital with serious burns Friday night.

Firefighters were called to Tweeder Medicinal Dispensary on Eglinton Avenue West around 8 p.m. The blast blew out the front window of the establishment, scattering glass all over the sidewalk.

Police say a man in his 30s was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. They do not know if the man was an employee of the dispensary.

Police did not have any other details as to what may have caused the explosion, except that it likely occurred in the basement. Police added that their hazardous materials unit did not find any plants in the basement.

The Ontario Fire Marshals office and the Toronto Police criminal investigation bureau have been called in to investigate.

Ward 22 Councillor Josh Matlow said this specific dispensary has been a concern to area residents for months.

“I can confirm that my office received a complaint from a resident about this dispensary and we requested Toronto police to investigate,” said Matlow.

An Ontario Fire Marshals representative told CityNews they’re currently trying to determine what type of fuel led to the explosion.

Mayor Tory said the city is doing whatever it can to control the spread of unlawful dispensaries.

“City authorities and police take whatever action they can within the context of the law. These are establishments operating contrary to the law, outside of the law, and they don’t belong in huge numbers or any numbers until the law is changed, in neighbourhood or with retail stores,” he said.
