SIU investigating after cyclist hit by police cruiser in Scarborough

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in after a cyclist was struck by a Toronto police cruiser in Scarborough.

The 39-year-old man was struck on Kennedy Road near Merrian Road, south of Eglinton Avenue, just before midnight on Monday night.

He has serious injuries to his head and upper torso.

No police officers were injured.

The cyclist was heading west on Merrian and the cruiser was heading north on Kennedy at the time of the crash, the SIU said.

It’s not known if the officers were responding to a call.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Correction: The crash happened just before midnight on Monday night. It was earlier reported that it happened just after midnight, on Tuesday morning.
