SIU probing shooting, death near Weston and Sheppard

By News Staff

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in after a man was found dead near Weston Road and Sheppard Avenue on Friday morning.

Toronto police confirmed they were called to Starview Lane around 6:40 a.m. following a report of a wanted man in the area.

SIU spokesperson Jason Gennaro says officers were attempting to make an arrest under the Rail Safety Act when a confrontation ensued and a 42-year-old man was shot around 9 a.m. He says one shot was fired and a Taser was also deployed.

Gennaro added that ETF officers were also present on the scene, however, he would not say how many or what their role was in the incident.

Neighbours did report hearing gunshots in the area.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
