Toronto man charged in 2015 fatal hit-and-run

By News Staff

A 56-year-old man has been charged nearly a year after a fatal hit-and-run in the city’s west end.

On May 31, a 39-year-old woman was struck and killed by a westbound vehicle while crossing Bloor Street West, just west of Dovercourt Road, around 9 p.m.

The impact of the collision sent the woman into the eastbound lanes, where she was then hit by a taxi cab.

The vehicle, described as a white, four-door 1986-1991 Mercedes Benz S class, fled the scene but was located by police a few days later after a lawyer for the registered owner of the vehicle contacted authorities with its location.

Deriba Wakene, of Toronto, has been charged failure to stop at the scene of an accident causing death.

Police would like to thank the media and the public for their assistance with this investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-1900.
