Thousands march for International Women’s Day in Toronto

March 8 is International Women’s Day in Canada. Today, three-thousand men and women took part in a march in downtown Toronto.
Participants included students, members of labour groups and politicians. They all had their own reasons for marching in the annual event, which started at Bloor and St. George.
For some it was about getting the “No To Violence and Hate” message out. For others it was to highlight that Black Lives Matter. For most is was about standing in solidarity with their sisters.
The first International Women’s Day was observed on March 19, 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed a day for women’s rights and international peace. Following the United Nation’s lead, Canada chose March 8 as International Women’s Day.
