QUEBEC CITY SCHOOLS MOURN FOUR OF THEIR OWN TODAY

Classes are cancelled today at two Quebec City schools with ties to two current and two former teachers who were killed in last week’s terror attack in Burkina Faso. Counselling services will be offered at both Jean-de-Brebeuf and Cardinal Roy high schools. In all six Canadians, all from Quebec were killed when terrorists stormed a hotel in the African country, killing at least 28 people in all.

ECONOMY TO DOMINATE FIRST FEDERAL CABINET MEETING OF 2016

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his cabinet will talk about the recent turmoil in the economy and where things are headed in the coming year. The cabinet is holding a retreat in New Brunswick today. Trudeau will hold a full day of meetings today before taking some of his ministers to Switzerland for the World Economic Forum in Davos.

JURY SELECTION TO BEGIN TODAY IN ONTARIO MURDER TRIAL

The task of picking jurors starts today in Hamilton for the trial of two men accused of first degree murder in connection with the 2013 death of an Ontario man. Tim Bosma took two men for a test drive in a pickup truck he was trying to sell and never came back. His body was found a week later. The search for Bosma spread out to cover the Greater Toronto Area and Waterloo and garnered national attention. Lawyers for the two suspects facing first degree murder charges have said they’ll plead not guilty.

TRIAL TO BEGIN FOR REGINA COUPLE ACCUSED IN DEATH OF GIRL

A Regina couple are set to go on trial today in connection with the death of a four-year-old girl and the neglect of her two-year-old sister. Tammy and Kevin Goforth face second-degree murder and criminal negligence causing bodily harm charges. The girls can’t be identified because of a court order. Police alleged they were abused and neglected while living in the Goforths’ home in 2012. The Goforths are not the biological parents.

LOTS OF MILLENIALS IN THE DARK ABOUT RRSP SAVINGS

A survey done for TD Bank suggests that nearly a third of young Canadians don’t very know much about retirement savings plans — specifically what the plans can and cannot be used for. Only half of those surveyed knew that money in an RRSP could be used to help buy their first home, while just 28 per cent knew it could be used to help further their education later in life under the lifelong learning plan.

BMO LAUNCHES ‘ROBO-ADVISER’ SERVICE

The Bank of Montreal has launched an online porfolio manager, making it the first of Canada’s big five banks to wade into the “robo-adviser” business. After a trial run that started on Dec. 7, the service — dubbed SmartFolio — is available to all investors starting today. The new service responds to concerns that banks risk losing market share if young, tech-savvy millennials ditch traditional banking in favour of fintech startups that offer low-cost, online investment services.
