Yes, changing the tires on your car is a chore. But for an Oshawa mother and son, it’s also a crime.

Durham police allege the pair stole more than $50,000 worth of snow tires from car dealerships and re-sold them.

The thefts were first reported at a Port Perry Ford dealership on Aug. 5. Police say the suspects had used bolt cutters to open a storage container at Taylor Ford on Highway 7A, and made off with more than $15,000 worth of tires and rims.

The suspects and their vehicle were captured on video surveillance.

In their investigation, police found that two more dealerships, these two outside of Durham Region, were targeted. A Toyota dealership in Cobourg was robbed of more than $18,000 worth of snow tires and rims on July 30, and more than $15,000 worth of snow tires and rims were stolen from Houston Ford on Main Street in Stouffville on Aug. 3.

Police allege the items were taken to a tire store on Ritson Road South in Oshawa to be sold.

Sheila Stephens, 43, of Courtice, and her son, Tyler Stephens, 24, of Oshawa, were arrested and released on bail. They are charged with three counts of break and enter over $5,000 and three counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

Police are seeking a warrant for a second man.
