GTA under rainfall warning as remnants of Hurricane Patricia roll through

Heavy rain and windy conditions are set to hit the GTA, as the region braces for the remnants of Hurricane Patricia.

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for much of Ontario, including Toronto and the entire GTA, calling for between 45-55 millimetres of rain for most areas on Wednesday.

“A developing fall storm over the American Midwest is expected to merge with moisture from the remnants of Hurricane Patricia then track toward the Great Lakes,” the weather agency said in a statement.

“Hazards may include power outages due to heavy downpours causing tree limbs to fall on power lines. Water pooling on roads may result from heavy downpours or debris blocking drains.”

Rain is expected to make its way into southwestern Ontario late Tuesday night and the Golden Horseshoe area by Wednesday morning.

Environment Canada warns the rain may be heavy at times with the potential for thunderstorms.

The rain will be accompanied with strong gusty winds, with wind gusts of 70 km/h likely in most areas.

“The remnants are combining with an area of low pressure to give us a good soaking for Wednesday and Thursday, and that very strong wind,” 680 NEWS meteorologist Jill Taylor said.

She said it will be windy on Tuesday morning, with developing late in the evening and an east wind to 50 km/h.

As for Wednesday, Taylor said the wind speed will be 50 km/h but higher gusts are expected. It will be a relatively warm one though with a high of 16 C.
