Woman charged in Markham crash that killed four-year-girl

A 39-year-old woman is facing charges after a four-year-old girl was struck and killed by an SUV in Markham on Thursday.

Police say two girls were crossing the street with their mother at Fieldside Street and Riverwalk Drive just before 2 p.m. when they were struck by a black Mercedes SUV.

The other girl, a seven-year-old, remains in hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Both girls attended nearby David Suzuki Public School.

“Sadly, the pedestrians that were struck were both children, ages four and seven,” confirmed Const. Andy Pattenden. “One of the children was rushed to hospital, the four-year-old, with life-threatening injuries. Sadly that child has succumbed to those injuries at hospital.”

Police say the driver remained on the scene.

Warren Athesivan witnessed the terrible aftermath. “I heard a lot of crying, so I thought something happened. I went up and the kid was hit hard. All the blood was on the floor,” he said. “I saw the mom cradling (her) children.”

Neighbours mourned the little girl’s death.

“She was such a sweetheart,” said family friend Rizwane Khan. “She was so beautiful.”

Gowry Somasekarampillai, of Markham, faces charges of dangerous operation causing death and dangerous operation causing bodily harm. She is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 26.
