Body found after fire breaks out in Scarborough home

One person is dead after a two-alarm fire broke out at a Scarborough home on Monday.

Emergency crews were called to the house on Pennybrook Lane, in the Sheppard Avenue and Markham Road area, just before 5:30 p.m.

Fire officials said they were able to knock down the flames within minutes and found nothing after a primary search of the home but, during a secondary search, a body was found in an upstairs bedroom.

The identity of the victim has not been released.

Tenants who live in the basement of the house tell CityNews that one young woman lives upstairs but they are unsure how many people reside in the home. Police have not confirmed this.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Police are on scene.
