Rogers Centre crowds have quadrupled as Jays tickets grow increasingly scarce

As we welcome the boys in blue back home tonight for their series against the Detroit Tigers, tickets are getting harder and harder to score.

Since the trade deadline when Toronto grabbed ace pitcher David Price along with Troy Tulowitzki, Mark Lowe, LaTroy Hawkins and Ben Revere, ticket sales have nearly quadrupled from the days prior to the deadline.

All eyes are now on the Jays, with longtime fans and recent bandwagon-jumpers all vying for a ticket to see them in action.

And if you haven’t already heard, the Jays are the odds-on favourites to win the World Series, according to Bodog.

The Blue Jays have sold out their last four home games and “will continue that streak with three more this weekend,” said Jason Diplock, vice president of ticket sales and service.

Diplock even went so far as to say that the Blue Jays “should be in a position to sell out all remaining home games,” aside from the Cleveland series next week.

Season ticket holders have already been able to snatch up their postseason tickets (they went on sale on Aug. 26) and Flex Pack subscribers got a surprise in their email box on Friday telling them to get ready for their turn to purchase their postseason tickets.

“The elements of a postseason run are coming together, as recent player acquisitions have bolstered an already strong team,” read the email. “We’re very excited about the potential of hosting postseason games in our ballpark this October.”

Flex Pack subscribers who purchased it before Dec. 5, 2014 can purchase their postseason tickets on Sept. 2, whereas those who bought them after Dec. 5 must wait until Sept. 4. And if you purchased a “6ix Pack” you get to wait until Sept 8.

Got it?

And ticket sales are off to “a very strong start,” Diplock said.

If you aren’t a season ticket holder or a Flex Pack subscriber, there could be a glimmer of hope for you.

A quick look through StubHub.com, the popular online site that connects people who want to buy or sell tickets at their chosen price, for a ticket to Friday’s night game has some tickets going for as low as $20.00 in the upper bowl or a steep $852.99 in the outfield 100s.

In the month of August, the Blue Jays are the fifth highest selling MLB team in the league said Alison Salcedo of StubHub, following behind the San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees and New York Mets.

“Toronto Blue Jays sales are up more than 30 percent year-over-year,” said Salcedo. “2015 will end up being the highest selling season StubHub has ever had for Blue Jays tickets.”
