Police cleared in drowning death of suspect in teen cellphone murder

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has cleared Ottawa police officers of any wrongdoing after one of the suspects wanted in connection with the shooting death of 18-year-old Jeremy Cook drowned in the Rideau River.

Police say the Brampton teen was killed June 14 after tracking his cellphone to a car in London with three men inside and was shot multiple times when he grabbed the car as it began to drive away.

According to the SIU, about a week after the shooting Muhab Sultan, 23, who was wanted for second-degree murder, fled the scene as he was being questioned by police after he struck an Ottawa police officer on his bike.

When police caught up with the stolen vehicle officers arrested a passenger in the car but Sultan had fled on foot, eventually making his way to the Rideau River.

The SIU said that when officers got on scene Sultan was in the middle of the river, screaming for help. Before officers could reach the man he disappeared under water.

His body was found three days later.

Last month London police confirmed on Twitter that Mohamed Sail, the second man wanted in connection with Cook’s death, had turned himself in to police.

Sail was wanted on a second-degree murder charge.
