Toronto, GTA experience severe rain and hail storms

Toronto and much of southern Ontario were under a severe thunderstorm watch Sunday, as very strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain blasted the city and surrounding areas during the brief but intense storm.

Environment Canada had issued a weather warning just after 5 p.m. on Sunday but downgraded that warning to a watch around 6:40 p.m.

There were multiple power outages, Toronto Hydro said, and the Veld Music Festival was cancelled. Downsview Park, the site of the festival, was evacuated.

What’s the difference between a watch and a warning?

A “watch” means that conditions favour the development of bad weather. A “warning” means such terrible conditions are either happening right now or are imminent and you should take the proper precautions.
