Facts and figures about Spadina-Fort York riding

Things to know about the riding of Spadina-Fort York:

Worth watching: The newly created riding in downtown Toronto is suddenly in the spotlight due to the looming showdown between Liberal Adam Vaughan and the NDP’s Olivia Chow. Chow announced she’s running again in Spadina-Fort York, the riding that incorporates much of the area she held for years, Trinity-Spadina. Vaughan won Trinity-Spadina in a byelection last summer when Chow vacated the federal seat to unsuccessfully run for mayor of Toronto. Since the loss, she’s been teaching at Ryerson University. The two former Toronto city councillors are now going head-to-head.

Population: More than 82,000 and rising due to growing number of condo-dwellers in the area.

Major communities: Much of Toronto’s downtown core, the downtown waterfront, the Toronto islands.

Incumbent: Vaughan, a onetime left-leaning councillor who’s now a left-leaning federal Liberal.

Main challengers: Chow’s aiming to make a federal comeback, and she wants her riding back. She announced her intention to take on Vaughan on Tuesday with beaming NDP Leader Tom Mulcair by her side.

Election history: Spadina-Fort York was created by the 2012 federal electoral boundaries redistribution push in advance of the 2015 election.

Fun fact: This is a race that could get nasty. In a recent interview with the Toronto Star, Vaughan called Chow a “serial quitter.” He sniped: “She has had a string of unfinished jobs — she didn’t finish city hall, she didn’t finish Parliament and she has barely begun her stint at Ryerson.” Chow didn’t return fire on Tuesday.
