Wrong way driver on Hwy. 407 charged with impaired driving

A 52-year-old woman has been charged with impaired driving after she drove her vehicle the wrong way on Highway 407 Saturday morning.

Witnesses reported seeing a vehicle make a U-turn on the westbound lanes of Highway 403 near Waterdown Road around 5 a.m. and head the wrong way before making its way onto the 407 – still heading east in the westbound lanes.

OPP said officers were able to catch up with the driver near Appleby Line but it took several attempts to get the vehicle to stop.

“The vehicle slowed down but still continued to try to get around the officers,” OPP Const. Kerry Schmidt explained. “The police officers pinned the vehicle, which caused the vehicle to spin around slightly. The driver still tried to turn their vehicle and continue travelling eastbound. Officers then pinned the vehicle again a second time, finally got the vehicle to stop.”

Police said Amal Swais, of Mississauga, suffered minor injuries and was arrested on scene.

She has also been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and flight while pursued by a peace officer. Her license has been suspended for 90 days and her vehicle was impounded.
