Support worker charged with sex assault of elderly man

A personal support worker who allegedly sexually assaulted an elderly man in his own home was denied bail on Friday.

Danilo Alcala, 61, was arrested on Thursday and charged with one count of sexual assault. He will next appear in court on July 21.

The 95-year-old man he’s accused of assaulting lives near Broadview and Mortimer avenues.

The alleged crime has rattled even seasoned detectives.

“I think we’re all in shock here at the station as to what happened,” said Det. Sgt. Jim Gotell.

“We’re alleging that this offence occurred yesterday…and it may have occurred in the past,” he said, appealing to other potential victims to come forward.

The victim’s son tells CityNews he set up a hidden camera inside the home and recorded the alleged offence.

Alcala was arrested while at the home of another client.

Police did say that people who employ a personal support worker for a family member could stay home with the worker, or take additional safety precautions such as video surveillance.

The accused works for Spectrum Health Care, which issued the following statement:

“We are cooperating fully with the Toronto police…and other regulatory authorities and have launched an internal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the allegation.”
