TIMELINE: SIU investigations involving Toronto police in 2015

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is an arm’s-length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

The SIU has been called in to probe numerous incidents involving Toronto police so far in 2015. The details of 12 of them are listed below.

Jan. 7, 2015

Police were initially called to the scene after receiving reports of an armed man allegedly trying to rob a nearby convenience store. Police say he ran off and went into the pharmacy, when he was confronted by officers.

Feb. 18, 2015

Emergency units were called to the scene near Dupont Street around around 9 p.m. after receiving a call about a male with a knife in the area of 140 Spadina Road.

When paramedics arrived they found a man without vital signs, suffering from a gunshot wound. He later died in hospital.

March 24, 2015

Three officers riding bicycles engaged with a man at the southeast corner of Gerrard Avenue East and George Street. There was an altercation and the man was treated in hospital for an arm injury.

April 16, 2015

Police say several people were standing outside a townhouse Driftwood Avenue, near Jane Street, just before 6 p.m. when another group with firearms approached and began firing.

They say five of the people standing out front were shot.

SIU was called after one of the suspects was shot by police on Elmhurst Drive near Islington Avenue and Rexdale Boulevard.

May 6, 2015

Officers were executing a search warrant on a Markham Road apartment when an 18-year-old man fled from the residence. After officers caught up with the man, there was an scuffle and the man sustained a nose injury.

June 10, 2015

Officers arrived at a home on Balliol Street after receiving a call regarding a suicidal male. After police knocked on the door, a gunshot was heard from inside. Officers were let into the home and found a deceased man in a bedroom.

July 1, 2015

Police were called to a home on Earnscliffe Road after a car crashed through a fence and ended up in the back porch of a home. The suspect was found one block north on Oakwood Avenue. The SIU said the man went into medical distress as police handcuffed him.

July 2, 2015

Police were following a vehicle before it crashed into a property on Jesmond Avenue. After a search of the area, a man was located and arrested by police. He was taken to hospital and diagnosed with a fractured arm.

July 5, 2015

Police were called to the scene for reports of a man armed with a hammer on Gilbert Avenue.

The SIU said there was a confrontation between the officers and the man, and one officer fired his gun.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

July 25, 2015

A shooting in the entertainment district sent one man to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

It happened at around 3:30 a.m. in the area near Peter and Adelaide streets.

Oct. 2, 2015

The SIU says a 57-year-old woman suffered serious leg injuries after she was struck by a Toronto Police Service vehicle at Richmond and Adelaide streets.

Nov. 16, 2015

A woman was rushed to hospital after police responded to a call for someone with a knife in the area of Finch Avenue East and Victoria Park Avenue. Police later said that the SIU had invoked their mandate.
