SIU investigating fatal Niagara fire

By News Staff

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is probing a fatal fire that left two people dead in the Niagara Region.

Two Niagara police officers were also injured, one seriously.

Officers were called to a home on Epp Street — located in the community of Vineland, Ont., in the town of Lincoln — around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Police said the officers got into an interaction with a man at the home, sending one officer to hospital via air ambulance. A second police officer was treated at the scene.

The fire then broke out and engulfed the home. Once firefighters had put out the fire, the bodies of a 73-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man were found in the home.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
