Teen charged after grass fire spreads, causes power outages in Burlington

Police have arrested a 14-year-old in connection with a grass fire in Burlington on Saturday which caused power outages in the area.

The fire started around 4:30 p.m. near Dundas Street and Highway 407, spread to a wooden hydro pole and brought it down.

A nearby townhouse complex was evacuated as a precaution, and part of Dundas was also shut down for a short time.

Police said the teen was trying to burn small items with a lighter, when the dry grass caught fire and quickly spread.

The youth was arrested and charged with arson, mischief to property and failing to comply with probation and is due in court next month.

The accused can’t be named due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
