Rick Hansen’s daughter tells emotional story of her stillborn “baby Reid”

It was not the story Emma Hansen had been drafting in her mind.

The daughter of famed Paralympian Rick Hansen, had her first born son stillborn and wrote about the pain and experience on her blog.

“Ok. I have the ultrasound focused on his heart now. Do you see that? It’s not moving,” Hansen’s doctor told her in the hospital. “And there’s no red and blue to signify blood flow. I’m so sorry, but your baby is dead.”

Hansen said the story is of their angel baby Reid Richard VandenBrink and titled it Born Still but Still Born.

Hansen said on her Instagram that it was the most painful and most healing story she has ever chosen to write.

“He lived for 39 weeks and 6 days in my womb, and it didn’t seem possible for him to just stop living one day before his due date. One day,” she wrote.

Reid was born at 2:24 a.m. on April 4th.

“For though he was born still, he was still born,” wrote Hansen.

His death was caused by a knot in his umbilical cord that Hansen said may have happened when the baby had somersaulted inside her womb.

On Facebook, her father wrote, “Sending all my love to my daughter Emma and her husband Aaron, who have shown incredible strength and grace during this heartbreaking loss. Our family is so grateful and touched for all your support. Little baby Reid will be loved and remembered forever.”

He also added his daughters story is shining a light on this important issue and it has helped their healing as they mourn “baby Reid.”

“We hope it helps others as well. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” he said.
