Toronto ombudsman to step down at end of term

The City of Toronto will be looking for a new ombudsman come fall.

Fiona Crean announced Monday she will step down when her term ends in November citing “extraordinarily harmful debates” in city council concerning her reappointment.

The nature of divisiveness created by debates was harming the office and harming oversight at the city, Crean said at a news conference.

She made her final decision in the last week after seeing the acrimonious budget debate at city council.

Crean called the reappointment debates “problematic,” adding she supports a staff report recommending a single, lengthened term for the ombudsman — something she suggested in the past. That report goes to executive committee this week.

The announcement came as Crean released what will be her final annual report, entitled “Advocating for Fairness.”
