OPP probing alleged sex assaults at Cobourg-area house party: report

Disturbing allegations have enveloped a bedroom community east of Toronto and one of its junior hockey teams.

The OPP is investigating an alleged incident Saturday evening at a house party near Bewdley, a small town north of Cobourg.

“We received a call on Monday morning … with regards to an incident that occurred at that house party,” said acting Sgt. Kelly Daniels.

“At this point we have the criminal investigation branch of the OPP investigating.”

A report in the Peterborough Examiner alleged four women were sexually assaulted at the party.

The newspaper’s source also said several Cobourg Cougars players were there, but the OPP said it couldn’t confirm that fact.

“I’m unable to confirm that, but I can tell you that everyone that has been asked by the OPP as part of the investigation so far has cooperated fully,” Daniels said.

The team’s managers said the OPP hasn’t yet spoken to them about the investigation and couldn’t confirm whether any players were at the party. They said they will cooperate fully if asked.

“When allegations of any nature are made, we take them all very seriously,” the Cougars said in an email.

“In this case, none of the allegations made have been proven, nor has the hockey club been contacted with regards to any investigation.”

The team also said it has no connection to a now-deleted tweet of a picture of a trophy with a vulgar caption, including the hashtag #consentisoverrated.
