Toronto under extreme cold weather alert as temps set to drop

Toronto’s medical officer of health has issued an extreme cold weather alert for the city on Wednesday, with temperatures expected to plummet overnight.

An alert is issued when temperatures are set to reach -15 C or colder according to Environment Canada’s forecast.

Although the temperature is milder in the morning, 680News meteorologist Jill Taylor said the mercury will drop to -15 C by nightfall with a wind chill near -24.

During extreme cold weather alerts, extra services are available to the homeless, including two 24-hour drop-ins and extra shelter beds.

Toronto saw a bit of a reprieve from the cold on Tuesday with the temperature finally reaching above the freezing mark. By 9:43 p.m. on Tuesday, it was 0.4 C at Pearson International Airport.

As of Jan. 7, Toronto has been under an extreme cold weather alert for 36 days.
