Key cancer stats from the Canadian Cancer Society

As World Cancer Day is marked in Toronto and across the globe, here’s some key stats from the Canadian Cancer Society:

  • It’s estimated that 191,300 Canadians developed cancer in 2014.
  • 210 Canadians die each day from cancer.
  • Cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada and is responsible for 30% of all deaths.
  • Lung, breast, colorectal and prostate cancer are the most common types of cancer in Canada (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer).
  • Within Canada, the incidence and mortality rates for cancer are generally highest in Atlantic Canada and Quebec. It’s the lowest in B.C.
  • Between 2006-2008, survival rates of cancer increased from 56% to 63% for all cancers combined

What can be done to help prevent cancer?

  • One third of all cancers may be prevented by eating well, being active, and staying at a healthy body weight
  • Avoid smoking and second hand smoke
  • Limit alcohol intake
