Loblaws at Maple Leaf Gardens evacuated due to fumes

The massive Loblaws store at Maple Leaf Gardens was evacuated on Wednesday evening after fumes were noticed in the building.

Hazmat crews, along with emergency officials, were called to the supermarket at Carlton and Church streets around 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

One person was taken to a local hospital to be treated for mild irritation.

Fire officials said they have been unable to pinpoint the source of the chemical smell but that it has dissipated.

The incident is not believed to have been criminal in nature, and crews continue to investigate to determine the source.

Police told 680News they believe someone may have sprayed pepper spray in one of the aisles and are currently looking at security video.

The store re-opened a short time later.
