Toronto, parts of GTA under special weather statement

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Toronto and parts of the GTA, saying another Arctic cold front will bring blowing snow, which will make driving conditions poor on Thursday night and Friday.

“An Alberta Clipper with yet another Arctic cold front will sweep southeastward across the regions tonight, bringing an area of snow with it,” the national weather agency said in the statement.

Halton-Peel, York-Durham and Hamilton are covered by the special weather statement, which calls for two to five centimetres of snow. Between five and 10 centimetres of snow are possible in a few locations near the Great Lakes and in Southwestern Ontario.

“Strong and gusty southwesterly winds will cause drifting and some blowing snow in many areas, with visibility reduced to one kilometre or less in exposed areas.”

Much of Southern Ontario, including Toronto and the GTA, was under an extreme cold warning for two days until it was lifted early Thursday morning.

An extreme cold weather alert for the City of Toronto, which triggers emergency services for the homeless, ended at noon on Thursday.

CityNews meteorologist Adam Stiles is forecasting snow amounts of three to six centimetres for the GTA beginning late Thursday.

The high for Friday is forecasted to be -7 C.
