Toronto restaurants, events and other things open on Christmas Day

Restaurants

The Lakeview (1132 Dundas St. W.): This Dundas and Ossington diner is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Starting Christmas Eve at 5 p.m. and lasting until New Year’s Eve, they serve up a deep-fried turkey marathon: a deep-fried bird served with stuffing, mashed potatoes, roasted squash, cranberry sauce and gravy. And $1 from every plate goes to FoodShare Toronto.

Fran’s Restaurant (Various locations): The College Street and Victoria Street locations of this Toronto institution are open 24/7, so Christmas Day is no exception.

The Thompson Diner (550 Wellington St. W.): Are you sensing a theme? The diner-style restaurant at this King West hotel is sticking to its guns and staying open 24 hours a day, including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. And that is good news for anyone craving some double mac and cheese drizzled with truffle oil this holiday season.

Caplansky’s Deli (356 College St.): The deli is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., serving up smoked meats and other deli classics for all who crave them (and can get a table).

TOCA (181 Wellington St. W.): For a more refined dining experience, the Ritz-Carlton’s restuarant, TOCA, is offering a holiday prix fixe menu for $98 per person. Entrees include a turkey option, but a sea bass or filet mignon is also available for those less poultry-inclined.

Events and Attractions

Sing-along Sound of Music: Musical fans can indulge in a group sing-along session of the classic holiday tale of Nazis, nuns, and singing nannies. TIFF Bell Lightbox, 1 p.m. on Dec. 25.

Skating: Strap on some skates for a classic Canadian Christmas Day. Check your local rink for ice conditions, as the warmer temperatures and rain in the forecast might cut into ice time.

Shopping at Pacific Mall (4300 Steeles Ave. E.): Markham’s own Pacific Mall is the destination of choice for Christmas Day shoppers, likely thanks in large part to it being one of the only shopping centres open for business 365 days a year.

Ripley’s Aquarium (288 Bremner Blvd.): No time like Christmas to stare into the mouth of a shark or pet a stingray, everyone always says.
