Police arrest Toronto man in Kensington Market arson investigation

Toronto police have made an arrest in connection with an arson investigation in Kensington Market.

Sean Gellvear, 40, of Toronto, faces 16 charges in connection with the Dec. 1 fire that damaged several row houses in the Spadina Avenue and Oxford Street area.

The charges are five counts of mischief over $5000, four counts of mischief endangering life, four counts of arson having a disregard for human life, two counts of fail to comply with probation and prowl by night.

The fire broke out in a 100-year-old rowhouse and then spread to at least three other units. The unit where the fire started was gutted, and three other units were also damaged.

Three people escaped and no injuries were reported, but some residents were treated for heart trouble and high blood pressure.

Officials say five cats died in the fire.

Toronto Fire said the damage is pegged at $1 million.
