Broken watermain causes mudslide on Hwy. 403 in Hamilton

A portion of Highway 403 was closed for more than 12 hours in Hamilton Friday after mud flowed onto the roadway, bringing with it trees and water.

The mudslide occurred around 8:30 a.m. on Friday, closing the eastbound lanes. The lanes reopened after 9 p.m.

Ontario provincial police say it was caused by a broken watermain. As of 4 p.m., the water was still flowing down the embankment in spite of the water flow being shut off.

Debris on the highway forced the closure of the eastbound lanes from Main Street to York Boulevard.

Crews worked to secure the embankment and cement barriers were brought in.

Engineers will also be on the scene to investigate if York Street has been undermined by the water.
