Food colouring spill turns north Toronto creek green

Fears of a toxic spill were assuaged in a north Toronto neighbourhood after the Ministry of Environment confirmed that the green colour of Berry Creek near Albion and Weston Road was caused by non-toxic food colouring.

The water’s green tinge was first noticed on Monday and a resident alerted CityNews to the change. A day later a Toronto Water Service investigator and Ministry of Environment officials were both on the scene.

Water samples were taken from Berry Creek which runs into the Humber River.

The Ministry of Environment confirmed a spill from nearby U-Pak Disposals and Recycling Ltd., but said it was a non-toxic green food colouring that had seeped through a sewer and into the creek.

Toronto Water released the following statement:

“The company has been requested to clean the sewers affected by the spill. Any further action or instruction to the company from Toronto Water will happen once the investigation has been completed.”
