Arson caused townhouse fire at Keele & Sheppard, officials say

Police and the Ontario fire marshall’s office are investigating a fire in Toronto’s northwest end that may be a case of arson.

The fire broke out on the first floor of a townhouse on Grandravine Drive near Keele Street and Sheppard Avenue West around 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

“The firemen who were on scene, after they put out the fire, saw some evidence that made them believe that the first was deliberately set,” Const. David Hopkinson explained.

A couple asleep on the second floor of the home were able to get out safely.

“Had (the fire) blocked any of their access or had their fire alarm not worked, this could have ended very tragically,” said Hopkinson.

Property management told CityNews the president of the condo board lives in the home and that there have been ongoing disputes between the board and other homeowners.

Residents were recently told that as of Oct 1, their hydro would no longer be covered by their monthly maintenance fee – sparking some outage in the complex.

Police and fire officials are canvassing the area as part of their investigation.
