Security video released of August shooting outside downtown nightclub

Toronto police have released security video of a fatal shooting outside a downtown nightclub and say they’re “extremely confident” they’ll find those responsible.

Just after 3 a.m. on Aug. 26, Jelena Loncar had been chatting with friends outside C Lounge on Wellington Street, just west of Spadina Avenue, after finishing a bartending shift at nearby Hunters Landing restaurant.

Det.-Sgt. Debbie Harris said between eight and 10 suspects were seen getting out of three cars on Wellington and approaching the crowd were Loncar, 32, was standing. It was then that the shooting happened and she was hit by a stray bullet. She died later in hospital.

A man nearby, who police believe was the intended target, was shot six times while running toward Spadina and has since been released from hospital. Police said he was co-operating with the investigation.

“My sister was literally the nicest person in the world,” Loncar’s younger sibling Lana said at a news conference on Wednesday. “From the moment she woke up, she had a smile from one side of her face to the other. She greeted everyone with a massive hug.

“I didn’t just lose a sister, I lost a best friend and a roommate, and my parents lost their oldest child.”

Harris said about 20 minutes before the shooting, the suspect cars had been in the parking lot of the House of Lancaster strip club on The Queensway when there was an exchange of gunfire.

The drivers went straight from there to Wellington Street.

The first vehicle is a white, 2011-2012 Chrysler 300 base model, with no front plate or plate holder. It had a small black roof antenna knob. The second is a dark-coloured, four-door sedan with front and rear plates. The third is a dark-coloured, four-door sedan, with tinted windows and front and rear plates.

All three have standard rims and no sunroof.

Police are also looking for a person of interest, who was in one of the cars. He is a black man, 18-25 years old, about five-foot-10 to six feet tall, with a thin build, gold grills on his teeth and short, black hair, possibly in corn rows.

Detectives would like rental car agencies in particular to call if they have any information about similar vehicles between Aug. 25 and Aug. 26.
