INTERACTIVE CHART: Construction deaths in Ontario 2004-10

When he got new tools and safety equipment Ryan Pearce couldn’t wait to get to work. The 19 year old wasn’t just a kid with a hammer in his hand. For him that tool was more like a trophy.

His family told CityNews in an exclusive interview this week that the Scarborough native graduated close to the top of his class in the construction trade.

But Pearce’s life was cut short last week when he was killed on the job while working for EuroGroup Ltd. in Toronto.

He was right in the middle of a basement on Brookdale Avenue on Sept. 9 when the house collapsed. The Ministry of Labour is now investigating the collapse.

Pearce was Ontario’s 17th construction fatality in the province this year. The below chart provides a breakdown of construction fatalities going back a decade as well as for all on-the-job deaths.
