Woman accused of murdering mom testifies she wanted herself killed

A woman accused of killing her mother and trying to kill her father during an apparent home invasion took the stand on Tuesday and told a court she was trying to have herself killed.

Jennifer Pan and four others — including her ex-boyfriend Daniel Wong — are on trial for first-degree murder and attempted murder following the attack at the family home in Markham on Nov. 8, 2010.

Her mother, Bieh Ha Pan, 53, was shot dead. Her father, Hann Pan, 60, was shot in the face but survived.

The Crown alleges Pan orchestrated the hit on her parents — which initially appeared to be a home invasion — because she was angry they had thwarted her relationship with her then boyfriend.

On Tuesday, Pan took the stand in a Newmarket court and admitted that several months before the so-called home invasion she had hatched a plan to kill her father and had met with a friend of a friend to discuss it.

She told the jury, “I wanted to see if he was for real — that he would kill my dad.”

She even paid him $1,500 and waited several weeks for him to acquire a gun, the court heard.

“What was the plan?” her lawyer Paul Cooper asked.

“That he would go to my father’s workplace and shoot him dead,” she testified.

She said she realized she had been ripped off when he stopped taking her calls.

She further testified she wanted to kill herself instead and hired someone to do that. She began cutting herself and said she felt like the scum of the earth.

She eventually called off the suicide plan a few days before the alleged crimes.

Pan is expected to testify later this week that she didn’t know her parents would be shot the night of Nov. 8, 2010. Her lawyer said she’ll tell the court she was held at gunpoint while the intruders demanded money.

Her testimony is expected to last several days.
