York regional police have charged a man in connection with an online dating scam.
Police said they were contacted by a woman on Wednesday who was allegedly defrauded of money after entering into a relationship with a man met on an online dating website.
The woman gave $4,000 to the man after he suggested to her to invest money into several businesses he owns in Italy.
Police say she was then contacted by a friend who told her he has been allegedly involved in previous online dating scams.
Enrico Cagnotti, 56, of no fixed address, faces charges of breach of probation and fraud under $5,000. His aliases include Ricky, Rick, Depaolis and Franco Cesaretti.
Police arrested him at a Markham residence on Wednesday.
Investigators believe there may be more victims.
