York police officer charged in teen pedestrian’s death

A York Regional Police officer has been charged in the death of a pedestrian in Scarborough earlier this year, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) confirms.
Const. Remo Romano faces one count of dangerous driving causing death.
Natasha Carla Abogado, 18, was crossing St. Clair Avenue East, west of Warden, around 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 12 when she was hit by an unmarked pickup truck driven by Romano — an 11-year veteran of the force who was conducting surveillance. Abogado died at the scene.
“We are still in pain, the whole family, because we know my daughter is not coming back anymore,” the teen’s mother Sonia Abogado said.
“But it relieves us. I want justice for my daughter.”
Romano is due in court on July 24 and has been assigned to administrative duties until his trial is over, according to York police chief Eric Jolliffe.
“This is a terrible tragedy that has had a devastating effect on all those involved,” Joliffe said in a statement.
“On behalf of all members of York Regional Police, I extend our deepest condolences to the Abogado family on their loss.”
