Hurricane Cristina strengthens in Pacific off Mexico’s coast; no threat to land

By The Associated Press

MIAMI – Hurricane Cristina has strengthened off Mexico’s Pacific coast but still poses no threat to land.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Cristina’s maximum sustained winds late Wednesday were 100 mph (155 kph).

The hurricane was centred about 230 miles (370 kilometres) southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, and was moving northwest at about 6 mph (9 kph), farther out to sea.

The centre said some additional strengthening is possible during the next day or two and that swells generated by Cristina are affecting parts of Mexico’s southwestern coast. The swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
