Madi Vanstone, 12, still battling with province for cystic fibrosis drugs

Drug company Vertex Pharmaceuticals met with staff from the Ontario Ministry of Health in an attempt to strike a deal for cheaper access to life-saving cystic fibrosis medication for 12-year-old Madi and other patients like her.

Madi’s pills cost $500 each, for a grand total of $350,000 a year. The Vanstone’s pay for the drugs with the help of fundraising, private insurance, and a discount from the drug company. But that help may run out soon, leaving the family hoping the province will step in.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals has struck deals with 15 other countries to make the drug more accessible.

No concrete plans came out of Tuesday’s meeting.
